I made a goal to lose 110 lbs by the end of this year. I took my mom to her doctor’s appointment yesterday and jumped on the scale, to my surprise I had lost 11 pounds. That’s not bad at all! I haven’t been posting on a regular basis because of several projects I’ve been working on and an obedience training class for my Rottweiler. Starting February I’ll start making a daily post to keep everyone updated on my quest to get back into shape.

Kaulena’s obedience training class is giving me a workout every day. I train with her twice a day for 20 minutes and I think I get a bit more tired than she does. It looks like if I keep up with my diet and my daily walks I’ll meet my goal.

I’m stepping up my daily walking routine to twice daily for 45 minutes. A 45 minute walk before I go to work in the morning and a 45 minute walk in the evening. Hopefully I’ll adjust to this quickly. Stay cool, Keep Healthy!

Living in Hawaii…Normally if you place an order over the Internet for an item, it takes several days to a week and sometimes even longer depending on your preference of carrier service. Say for instance you wanted to rent a DVD of the latest movie from Netflix. At one time it took days to get it in the mail. While watching the news last night I found out that Netflix opened a warehouse in Halawa Valley back in November 2004. I was wondering how my son-in-law was getting his Netflix orders so quickly and found that out while watching the news.

Netflix opened a warehouse in Halawa Valley to get an edge over its Hawaii competitors. They have 10 employees who stuffs envelopes and send orders out daily. An announcement made by Blockbusters today said that they will open a distribution center here in Hawaii as competition heats up. Their goal is to provide overnight service to its customers whenever possible and a distribution center will provide that for their customers. Opening a distribution center in Hawaii will give them 39 nationwide.

When Netflix opened their warehouse back in 2004 they saw a surge in business. The key to repeat business is its quick service in turning out DVD’s as quickly as possible. The 10 employees expedite the process of handling thousands of DVDs daily. The Halawa facility is just one out a hundred of Netflix shipping facilities. If you live in Hawaii and subscribe to Netflix, this is how they provide you with quick turnaround service.

My wife and I started with a table top printer which we purchased for $3500 from an Entrepreneur Show that was held locally here in Hawaii. I have always wanted to start a screen printing business ever since I caught a glimpse of an ad that was posted in a business magazine with a husband and wife team standing next to a rotary printer. This ad was very attractive and it did get my attention.

So we purchased the Table-Top Printer and picked it up from the show the very next day. It was all packed up and ready to go. I have to laugh about this now because when we got it home it stayed in the box for another 3 months before my wife pushed me to get it set-up and to familiarize myself with the machine. It was baseball season and we had to start getting business from the baseball leagues in our area.

Well I knew nothing about screen printing; all I had to get started was a little book from Scott Fresner titled “How To Print T-Shirts For Fun and Profit”. I read it that night, set-up the Table-Top the next day and still had one piece of the pie missing, a computer to do the graphics and design. My wife and I purchased a new Apple Computer from CompUSA and I had it up and running that day. Still another obstacle I faced, I had to learn how to use the computer and most important learn the software program that I borrowed from a friend. I started out with simple designs until I got familiar with Adobe PhotoShop. I learned enough to get me by the first few months and then it started getting easier. We took every job that came our way. We completed every order a day in advance and kept up with all our new business orders.

We worked really hard to build our business. It was long hours and little time to be with our kids together as a family. It was normally my wife taking the kids to their sporting activities and when I could break away I would attend their games. It took my wife and I about 2 years to build up a sizable clientele that came back regularly. We had repeat orders every year from the same teams. I also designed five cook book covers for a football team fundraiser. Our business was building with a lot of word of mouth advertising which is known as one of the best and cheapest ways to advertise.

Plans for the business were to add an embroidery machine and other equipment to make life a little easier for the both of us. Plans changed going into our 7th year of business.

To be continued…

It’s tasty and meatless.

Barbecued Tempeh and Tofu with Corn Salsa

2 packages of five grain tempeh
1 block tofu, firm
1 red pepper, sliced
1 green pepper, sliced
1 onion, sliced
6 tablespoons Bragg’s Liquid Aminos or soy sauce
1 bottle barbecue sauce
3 tablespoons olive oil

Preheat the oven to 350*F. Slice the tempeh blocks lengthwise into 12 strips. In a large sauté pan, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the onions and fry until translucent, about 4 minutes. Add the peppers (you can use any color you prefer). Sauté until the peppers soften, about 4 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove the veggie mixture from the pan and set aside. Add another 1 tablespoon of olive oil to the pan and brown the tempeh on both sides. When golden brown, remove the tempeh from the pan and place into a baking dish. Squirt 2 tablespoons of the liquid aminos (or soy sauce) over the top of the tempeh. Then place half of the onion and pepper mixture on top of the tempeh and cover with barbecue sauce. Be generous with the barbecue sauce, this adds the flavor to this dish and it will marinate into the tempeh while it is in the oven. Bake for at least 30 minutes. The longer you bake it, the more flavorful the tempeh will get.

You can also make this same dish with tofu. After draining the water from the tofu container, lightly squeeze the tofu block between paper towels to remove some of the moisture. Leave some of the moisture in the tofu since you will be baking it and do not want it to be too dry. Then slice the tofu into 1 inch thick cutlets, starting from the narrow end. Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil to the fry pan and fry the tofu on both sides until it gets a golden brown crust. Place into a baking dish and squirt 2 tablespoons of the liquid aminos (or soy sauce) over the top of the tofu. Place the rest of the onion and pepper mixture on top of the tofu and cover with barbecue sauce. Bake the tofu for 20 minutes, be careful not to let it get too dry.

Corn Salsa

1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 cup sweet onions
1 cup celery
2 cups fresh or frozen corn
1/4 cup pimientos
Salt and pepper to taste

This corn salsa adds a fresh, crunchy side salad that lightens up the heavy barbecue tempeh and tofu cutlets. Heat a skillet to medium heat, add the olive oil and sauté the onions for about 3 minutes, until translucent. Add the celery, corn, and the pimientos, stir well, and cook together for another 3-5 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste

More and more people are turning to the WordPress platform. It’s easy to use and you’ll have a wide selection of themes and templates. I used Dreamweaver to build my websites, but once I learned WordPress I now build all of my sites using WP.

It will be a couple of months before I’ll have any training videos available. I started learning a program called Camtasia that will be used to produce these series of videos for this site. You’ll love the information that I’ll be offering and it’s all complements from zBlogster.

There will be more added to this Library besides WordPress. I’ll put together a list of training videos that I’ll produce and post it here. Make sure to check back for dates of my first series.

Kaulena and Cimba in this picture are pure Rotties. At the time we took these pictures Kaulena was 12 weeks and Cimba 9 weeks old. Kaulena is now 6 months old and both dogs will be going to obedience training starting the 20th of this month.

Here’s my Monday and Tuesday morning workout. Monday morning I woke up at 06:00AM and started my treadmill workout at 06:20. Both mornings was an excellent workout and I enjoyed it. In fact I had my 6 month old rottie watching me and kept trying to jump on the treadmill to walk with me. She might have got use to walking with me because normally I would do my morning walk around the neighborhood. All and all it was nice. My stats for the 2 days are lised below.

Monday Workout: 01/07/2008

Time: 18.56
speed: 3.3
Distance: 1.003
Calories: 119.6
Carbs: 14.9
Incline: 2.0

Tuesday Workout: 01/08/2008

Time: 18.16
speed: 3.5
Distance: 1.003
Calories: 118.8
Carbs: 14.8
Incline: 2.0

My times are getting a little better and I’m trying to bring my mile under 15 minutes by the end of this month. If I can do this then for the month of February, my plans are to start my speed at 3.0 and walk for 45 minutes in the morning and 45 minutes in the evening after work.

I haven’t been posting my diet but I have been watching what I eat. I normally have a protein shake for breakfast with a tall glass of ice water and for lunch a tossed salad with brioled chicken strips and a little dressing. Dinner would be a small tossed green salad with either chicken or steak. I stopped eating rice all together. I had a couple of monster drinks which I know I should stop but it’s way less than I’ve been drinking. I’ll go cold turkey soon.

If you have a chance visit their website. They offer Cooking DVD’s to show you how it’s done.

Basic Baked Tofu

1 block firm or super-firm tofu
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon Bragg’s Liquid Aminos or soy sauce (optional)

This recipe makes a basic baked tofu that you can then flavor with any of your favorite sauces for a source of healthy protein with an unlimited amount of taste variations. You can refrigerate the baked tofu and pull it out later in the week to add to stir fry and hot stews. Baked tofu is also a great protein addition to cold sandwiches or as a snack.

Preheat the oven to 350º. Remove the tofu from its package and place in a colander to drain for a few minutes or press the tofu block firmly between paper towels. Slice into strips lengthwise and drain the tofu again by placing the strips between a few layers of paper towels and patting to remove excess water. Cut the strips into medium bite-sized pieces and place them on an oiled baking pan. Drizzle a little more olive oil over the tofu pieces and toss to coat them well. Space the tofu pieces evenly and bake for about 20 minutes or until tofu is lightly browned. If you want, remove the tofu from the oven after 15 minutes and sprinkle with soy sauce or Bragg’s, then bake another 5 minutes. Do not over bake the tofu or it will become chewy. Check the tofu during baking time and if the pieces begin to swell up, that is a sign to take them out immediately. Let cool and enjoy with your favorite flavoring!

Teriyaki Sauce

1/2 cup soy sauce or Bragg Liquid Aminos
1 tablespoon fresh ginger (grated or minced)
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional)
3/4 cup water
1/4 cup sweetener of your choice (sugar, honey, maple syrup, fructose, Splenda, etc.)
2 tablespoons corn starch or arrowroot powder
2 tablespoons water
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 cup chopped green onion
3 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds

Heat the soy sauce and fresh ginger over medium heat in a skillet or saucepan. Stir in the garlic powder and turn the heat down to medium-low. Add a touch of your favorite hot sauce if you want a spicy teriyaki sauce. Add 3/4 cup water and the sweetener and stir until dissolved.

In a separate bowl, whisk the cornstarch (or other thickener) in an equal amount of water until completely dissolved, and then slowly add to the sauce while stirring continuously. Keep stirring over medium-low heat until the sauce starts to simmer and begins to thicken. Remove the pan from the heat and thoroughly mix the baked tofu pieces into the sauce. Garnish with chopped green onion and toasted sesame seeds.
